SENATORS DOWN SHEPHERD
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Davis & Elkins used a 14-hit attack en route to a 7-3 win over Shepherd University in WVIAC Northern Division baseball action at Fairfax Field on Sunday.
Shepherd took a 3-1 lead in the first inning by taking advantage of three hits and a Senator error. Junior outfielder Collin Brown (Durham, NC/Southern Durham HS/NC State) doubled, went to third on an infield error, and scored on a double by junior outfielder Joe Cook (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun County HS). Junior shortstop Ryan Brady (McSherrystown, PA/Delone Catholic HS/Hagerstown CC) later smacked a two-run triple to plate Cook and freshman third baseman Dirk Webb (Hedgesville, WV/Hedgesville HS), who reached base on a walk.
The Senators took a 6-3 lead in the seventh on five consecutive singles. Sean Bruce knocked a two-run single to key the Davis & Elkins rally. The Senators added a meaningless run in the eighth when Adam Thompson singled home Chris Fisher, who reached base on an error.
Sean Bruce led the Senators with a 3-for-5 outing. Adam Thompson, Dan Hruska, Mark Ruscello, and Brian Thompson each contributed a pair of hits.
Nicky Brown and Dirk Webb each had a pair of hits to lead the Rams.
Senior Scott Koscielniak (Severn, MD/Old Mill HS/CCBC-Catonsville) took the loss for the Rams, while Senator starter Ryan Flanigan gained the win. Tobi Stoner worked the final three frames to pick up the save.
Shepherd falls to 16-17, 8-4 in WVIAC action, while Davis & Elkins improves to 25-16, 8-3. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Salem International for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
