SHEPHERD BASEBALL SPLITS WITH DAVIS & ELKINS

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Shepherd University split WVIAC baseball doubleheader action against Davis & Elkins on Saturday at Fairfax Field. The Rams used a nine-hit attack with three home runs en route to a 7-4 win in game one. The Senators took the nightcap with an 8-4 victory.

Shepherd grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second inning in game one when junior first baseman John Hawse (Winchester, VA/James Wood HS/Potomac State) and senior shortstop Nicky Brown (Falling Waters, WV/Hedgesville HS/Potomac State) both singled and later scored on a two-run single by senior catcher David Toth (Lexington, KY/Lexington Christian Academy/Potomac State).

Senior outfielder Joe Cook (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun County HS) belted a two-run blast in the third to increase the Rams lead to 4-0.

Davis and Elkins rallied to tie the game at 4-4 in the fourth on four hits. Marc Ruscello's three-run homer highlighted the rally.

Shepherd took the lead for good in the sixth when sophomore Dirk Webb (Hedgesville, WV/Hedgesville HS) led off with double and Hawse followed with a two-run blast to right field off Shaw Hall. The Rams added an insurance run in the seventh on a solo homer from senior outfielder Collin Brown (Durham, NC/Southern Durham HS).

Hawse went 3-for-3 to pace the Rams in game one.

Sophomore reliever Josh Bowers (Williamsport, MD/Williamsport HS) gained the win, while Webb picked up his fifth save of the year. Ryan Flanigan took the loss for the Senators.

Ruscello smacked a pair of round-trippers to pace the Senators in the nightcap. Dan Hruska and Tobi Stoner also added homers for Davis & Elkins.

Collin Brown went 2-for-3 and freshman DH Andrew McCormick (Stephens City, VA/Sherando HS) belted a solo blast in the fifth to lead the Rams.

Junior starter Travis Mumaw (Edinburg, VA/Central HS/Potomac State) took the loss, while Stoner went the distance to gain the win for the Senators.

Shepherd moves to 32-13, 15-3 in WVIAC action, while Davis & Elkins is now 23-17, 11-9. The two teams return to action on Sunday for a 1:00 p.m. conference doubleheader.
