RAMS SWEEP DAVIS AND ELKINS

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Shepherd University swept a doubleheader from Davis & Elkins in WVIAC Northern Division baseball action at Fairfax Field on Saturday. The Rams took a 2-1 win in game one and pounded out 15 hits in an 8-3 victory in the nightcap.

Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first inning in game one when junior outfielder Collin Brown (Durham, NC/Southern Durham HS/NC State), moved to second on a single by junior second baseman Nicky Brown (Hedgesville, WV/Hedgesville HS/ Potomac State), and scored on a single by freshman third baseman Dirk Webb (Hedgesville, WV/Hedgesville HS).

The Rams extended their lead to 2-0 in the fifth. Junior shortstop Ryan Brady (McSherrystown, PA/Delone Catholic HS/Hagerstown CC) smacked a two-out double and scored on a single by junior catcher David Toth (Lexington, KY/Lexington Christian Academy/Potomac State).

Mark Ruscello homered in the seventh for the only tally for Davis & Elkins.

Junior starter Scott McCormick (Stephens City, VA/Sherando HS/Potomac State) tossed a three-hitter and fanned five to improve to 3-2. Tobi Stoner allowed five hits and struck nine in a losing cause for the Senators.

Collin Brown went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Nicky Brown was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs to pace the Rams in the nightcap. Ryan Brady, David Toth, and junior outfielder Ryan Harju (Purcellville, VA/Loudoun Valley HS/Hagerstown CC) each added a pair of hits.

Mark Ruscello hit a solo homer in the fifth and Brian Thompson added a two-run shot in the seventh to account for the Senator scoring.

Junior starter Tony Magnanelli (Frederick, MD/Frederick HS) scattered six hits and struck out eight in the win, while Senator starter Eric Lassiter took the loss.

Shepherd improves to 16-16, 8-3 in WVIAC action, while Davis & Elkins falls to 20-15, 7-3. The two teams return to action on Sunday for a 1:00 p.m. nine inning game.
