PRINCETON, W.Va. -- Concord College scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to gain a 12-11 win over Shepherd College and advance to the championship round on Sunday in second day action of the WVIAC Baseball Tournament at Hunnicutt Field on Saturday.
Shepherd jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning behind three-run homers by Charlie Drummond (Strasburg/Strasburg, VA) and Shane Wines (Warren County/Front Royal, VA).
Concord answered back with three runs in the first and one in the second to cut the deficit to 6-4.
The Rams increased their lead to 9-4 with three runs in the third. Jon Serrano (Brooke Point/Stafford, VA) smacked a two-run single to plate Tavis Laws (Sherando (Eastern Mennonite)/Stephens City, VA) and Josh Delawder (Paw Paw (Potomac State)/Paw Paw, WV), and later scored on a double off the bat of Joe Cook (Loudoun County/Leesburg, VA).
Concord cut the lead to 9-7 with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Chris Bowers' two-run homer highlighted the inning.
The Mountain Lions added a run in the fifth and took a 10-9 lead in the seventh on a two-run blast by Justin Stevenson.
The Rams regained the lead at 11-10 in the eighth when Eli Rock (Waynesboro/Waynesboro, PA) ripped a bases-loaded single to right to score Laws and Drummond.
Concord captured the win in the bottom of the eighth behind a two-run single by Ryan Adams.
Cook went 4-for-6 to lead the Rams, while Mike Spry (Kent County/Chestertown, MD) added a 3-for-4 performance. Laws and Serrano also had three hits each.
Ram reliever Austin Bowie (Loudoun Valley/Paeonian Springs, VA) suffered the loss, while Concord reliever Bubba Pulley worked the final 8 2/3 innings to gain the victory.
Shepherd ends it season at 25-18, while Concord (24-18) advances to face West Virginia State on Sunday.
