CONCORD OUTSLUGS SHEPHERD, 16-8
PRINCETON, W.Va. -- Concord outslugged Shepherd University for a 16-8 win in first day action of the WVIAC Baseball Tournament at Hunnicutt Field in Princeton on Friday night.
The Mountain Lions plated seven runs on five hits in the fourth inning to pull away for the win. Eric Crouse belted a three-run homer keyed the rally.
Joey Besl went 2-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs scored to lead Concord. Joey Crisp added a 2-for-3 effort with three RBIs and two runs scored.
Senior outfielder Joe Cook (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun County HS) went 3-for-5 to pace the Rams. Senior catcher David Toth (Lexington, KY/Lexington Christian Academy/Potomac State) and sophomore first baseman Dirk Webb (Hedgesville, WV/Hedgesville HS) each belted home runs and had a pair of hits.
Senior infielder Ryan Brady (McSherrystown, PA/Delone Catholic HS/Hagerstown CC) went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Rams in game one. added a a 4-for-4 effort with two runs scored and an RBI, while freshman third baseman Andrew McCormick (Stephens City, VA/Sherando HS) went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
Senior outfielder Collin Brown (Durham, NC/Southern Durham HS/NC State) and junior outfielder John Hawse (Winchester, VA/James Wood HS/Potomac State) each contributed a pair of RBIs.
Concord starter Ben Grimm earned the win, while sophomore reliever Josh Bowers (Williamsport, MD/Williamsport HS) took the loss.
Shepherd falls to 33-15, while Concord iimproves to 24-22. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they take on Fairmont State at 12:30 p.m. at Anderson Field in Athens.
