SHEPHERD BASEBALL SPLITS WITH CONCORD
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Shepherd University split baseball doubleheader action with Concord on Wednesday afternoon at Fairfax Field. The Rams used an 18-hit attack en route to a 12-7 win in game one and Concord held off the Rams for a 14-8 win in the nightcap.
Senior infielder Ryan Brady (McSherrystown, PA/Delone Catholic HS/Hagerstown CC) went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Rams in game one. Senior outfielder Joe Cook (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun County HS) added a a 4-for-4 effort with two runs scored and an RBI, while freshman third baseman Andrew McCormick (Stephens City, VA/Sherando HS) went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
Senior outfielder Collin Brown (Durham, NC/Southern Durham HS/NC State), redshirt-freshman catcher Brett Caplan (Marriottsville, MD/Liberty HS), and junior DH Matt Noll (Charles Town, WV/Jefferson HS) each contributed two hits.
Josh Wright went 2-for-3 with two runs scored to pace Concord.
Junior reliever Travis Mumaw (Edinburg, VA/ Central HS/Potomac State) allowed two hits and two runs over four innings as he improved to 2-2 on the year. Sophomore reliever Josh Bowers (Williamsport, MD/Williamsport HS) tossed one-hit ball over the final two innings to gain his second save of the year. Chip Hedrick took the loss for the Mountain Lions.
Concord scored eight runs in the first three innings and withstood a late Ram comeback bid in a 14-8 win in the nightcap.
Justin Tabor led the Mountain Lions in the nightcap with a 2-for-3 effort with two runs scored and a pair of RBIs. Tabor belted a solo blast in the third inning. Ben Bennett, Joey Crisp, and Wright added two hits each.
McCormick and sophomore outfielder Jerry Jubb (Arnold, MD/ Broadneck, MD), and senior catcher David Toth (Lexington, KY/Lexington Christian Academy/Potomac State) had two hits apiece for the Rams. The Rams also got home runs from McCormick, senior second baseman Nicky Brown (Hedgesville, WV/Hedgesville HS/Potomac State), and junior outfielder John Hawse (Winchester, VA/James Wood HS/Potomac State).
Chris Smallwood gained the win for Concord, while Collin Brown (0-1) took the loss for the Rams.
Shepherd moves to 29-11, while Concord is now 18-13. The Rams return to action on Friday when they travel to Davis & Elkins for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
