SHEPHERD SPLITS WITH BLUEFIELD STATE

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Shepherd University split with Bluefield State College in WVIAC baseball action at Fairfax Field on Thursday. Shepherd pounded out 17 hits in a 14-3 win in game one and Bluefield State held off the Rams for a 5-4 triumph in the nightcap.

Junior outfielder Collin Brown (Durham, NC/Southern Durham HS/NC State) led the Rams at the plate in game one with a 3-for-4 performance with two RBIs and a pair of runs scored. Junior outfielder Joe Cook (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun County HS) was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored, while junior catcher David Toth (Lexington, KY/Lexington Christian Academy/Potomac State) was 2-for-2 with three RBIs. Sophomore first baseman Steve Kozak (Harpers Ferry, WV/Jefferson HS) and junior shortstop Ryan Brady (McSherrystown, PA/Delone Catholic HS/Hagerstown CC) each added a pair of hits.

Matthew Lane and Glen Ciborowski each had a pair of hits for Bluefield State.

Ram starter Travis Mumaw (Edinburg, VA/Central HS/ Potomac State) fanned nine in six innings en route to his second win of the year. Brian Morgan took the loss for Bluefield State.

Andy Coker went 3-for-4, while Jeremy Hedinger and Ben Blankenship each added a pair of hits to lead Bluefield State in the nightcap.

Collin Brown and Ryan Brady each went 2-for-3 to pace the Rams in the nightcap. Joe Cook added pair of hits, while freshman third baseman Dirk Webb (Hedgesville, WV/Hedgesville HS) went 1-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs.

Ram starter Steve Kozak took the loss for the Rams, while Matt Fowler went the distance to pick up the win for Bluefield State.

Shepherd moves to 19-18, while Bluefield State is now 6-44. The Rams return to action Friday, May 6 at 6:00 p.m. when they travel to Hunnicutt Field in Princeton for the WVIAC Tournament to face the winner of the Concord-West Virginia Wesleyan play-in game.
