BLUEFIELD, VA -- Shepherd College took a pair of games from Bluefield State in WVIAC baseball doubleheader action at Bowen Field on Sunday. The Rams took a 3-2 victory in the first game and added a 7-2 win in the nightcap.
The Rams took a 2-0 lead in game one in the first inning when Mike Spry (Kent County/Chestertown, MD) smacked a two-run homer.
Jason Rhea (Berkeley Springs (Pensacola JC)/Abingdon, VA) hit an RBI-double in the second to provide the winning margin for the Rams. Zac Couturiaux (Linganore (Allegany College)/Union Bridge, MD) added a pair of hits.
The Blues plated single runs in the sixth and seventh before Jimmy Jackson (Old Mill/Millersville, MD) sealed the win with his ninth save of the year.
Ram starter Brian Renner (Handley (Potomac State)/Winchester, VA) gave a strong performance to pick up his seventh victory of the season. He fanned three and allowed only two walks.
Shepherd broke a 2-2 tie in the nightcap with a five-run sixth inning for a 7-2 triumph in the nightcap.
Spry and Brian Powell (Allegany (Allegany College)/Cumberland, MD) each had a pair of hits for Shepherd. Charlie Drummond (Strasburg/Strasburg, VA) extended his hitting streak to 19 games with a single.
Ram reliever Jeff Gaskins (Loudoun Valley (Potomac State)/Lovettsville, VA) hurled three innings of hitless ball to gain his first win as a Ram. Shepherd starter Justin Collins (Fallston/Forest Hill, MD) scattered three hits over the first four innings.
Shepherd improves to 24-7-1, 13-3 in WVIAC play, while Bluefield State falls to 14-23-1, 4-12. The Rams continue on the road to face Alderson-Broaddus on Tuesday. Doubleheader action will begin at 1:00 p.m.
