SHEPHERD BASEBALL KNOCKS OFF WELSEYAN, 7-5

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Shepherd University handed West Virginia Wesleyan College a 7-5 loss in baseball action on Thursday afternoon at Fairfax Field.

Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when senior outfielder Collin Brown (Durham, NC/Southern Durham HS/NC State) led off with a triple and later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of sophomore first baseman Dirk Webb (Hedgesville, WV/Hedgesville HS).

The Bobcats tied the game at 1-1 in the third when Bobby Prim doubled and scored on an RBI-single from Eric Stettnisch.

Shepherd retook the lead in the fourth when senior second baseman Nicky Brown (Falling Waters, WV/Hedgesville HS/Potomac State) belted a solo blast to give the Rams a 2-1 advantage.

Wesleyan answered back in the top of the fifth with a pair of runs to take a 3-2 lead when Steve Holdsworth scored on a wild pitch and Justin Rozich scored on a infield error.

Shepherd took the lead for good at 6-3 with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. A solo homer by freshman third baseman Andrew McCormick (Stephens City, VA/Sherando HS), an RBI-double from senior outfielder Joe Cook (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun County HS), and two-run homer by Webb highlighted the rally.

A two-run single from Jake Driggers in the top of the seventh cut the Rams lead to 6-5.

The Rams added an insurance run in the bottom of the seven on a solo round-tripper from Cook.

Senior pitcher Scott McCormick (Stephens City, VA/Sherando HS/Potomac State) scattered four hits over six innings and three six en route to his second win of the year. Webb picked up his second save of the year. Art Yerecic took the loss for the Bobcats.
