SHEPHERD BASEBALL REACHES 30-WIN MARK; SPLITS WITH BLOOMSBURG

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Shepherd University split baseball doubleheader action with Bloomsburg University on Tuesday afternoon at Fairfax Field. Shepherd used a 12-hit attack to gain an 8-2 win in game one, while Bloomsburg earned the split with a 9-0 win in the nightcap. Shepherd moves to 30-12, while Bloomsburg is now 9-28.

Senior outfielder Collin Brown (Durham, NC/Southern Durham HS/NC State) went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored to pace the Rams in game one. Senior second baseman Nicky Brown (Hedgesville, WV/Hedgesville HS/Potomac State) and sophomore first baseman Dirk Webb (Hedgesville, WV/Hedgesville HS/Potomac State) each added two hits and two RBIs. Senior outfielder Joe Cook (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun County HS) added a 2-for-3 effort with three runs scored and an RBI.

Vinnie James went 2-for-3 to pace the Huskies.

Junior starter Steve Kozak (Harpers Ferry, WV/Jefferson HS) fanned seven and walked only one in five innings to improve to 5-0 on the year. Sophomore reliever Josh Bowers (Williamsport, MD/Williamsport HS) allowed one hit over the final two innings to seal the win. Bloomsburg starter Jeff Withelder took the loss.

Kevin Ward went 4-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs scored to lead Bloomsburg in the nightcap.

Webb went 2-for-3 to lead the Rams in the nightcap.

Michael Griggs scattered five hits in a complete game win for the Huskies. Rams starter Brandon Armentrout (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg HS) took the loss.

The Rams return to action next Monday when they host Shippensburg for a nine inning game at 3:00 p.m.

Notes: Collin Brown broke the single season hits record of 69 hits shared by Brian Powell and Lucas Taylor in 2002. Brown had four hits on the day and now has 71 for the year. Dirk Webb broke the single season mark for runs batted in set by Mike Spry in 2003 with 57. Webb drove in a pair of runs to set a new mark with 58 for the year.
