GASTONIA, NC -- Josh Cobb's grand slam in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted Belmont Abbey College to an 11-8 win over Shepherd College in baseball action at Sims Legion Park on Monday night.
Shepherd was led by Jason Walck (Waynesboro/ Waynesboro, PA), Charlie Drummond (Strasburg/Strasburg, VA), Mike Spry (Kent County/Chestertown, MD), and Nick Gozzard (Canon-McMillan (Allegany College)/Eighty-Four, PA) with two hits each. Walck drove in four runs, while Drummond, Gozzard, and Josh Delawder (Paw Paw (Potomac State)/Paw Paw, WV) each smacked doubles. The Rams also stole five bases on the day -- led by a pair from Jon Serrano (Brooke Point/Stafford, VA).
Crusader reliever Drew Dillingham picked up the win, while Shepherd's Brad McCullough (Susquehannock/New Freedom, PA) suffered the loss. Brian Renner (Handley (Potomac State)/Winchester, VA) went 6 2/3 innings with seven strikeouts. He allowed three earned runs.
Shepherd falls to 5-7, while Belmont Abbey improves to 12-16-1. The two teams will complete the two-game series on Tuesday with single game action beginning at 2:30 p.m.
