SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. -- Senior shortstop Mike Spry (Kent County/Chestertown, MD) of the Shepherd College baseball team was named today as the 2003 North Atlantic Region Player of the Year. Joining Spry on the North Atlantic All-Region first team was junior designated hitter Charlie Drummond (Strasburg/Strasburg, VA), while junior outfielder Josh Delawder (Paw Paw (Potomac State)/Paw Paw, WV) and senior pitchers J.R. Fitzwater (Hedgesville (Potomac State)/Hedgesville, WV) and Brian Renner (Handley (Potomac State)/Winchester, VA) were named to the second team.
Spry led the Rams with a .450 batting average with 68 hits in 151 at-bats. He also led the team in home runs (13), runs batted in (school-record 57), and runs scored (42). He also added 15 doubles and a triple.
Drummond batted .407 with 57 hits in 140 at-bats. Drummond led the team and tied a school record with 17 doubles. He also added 39 runs scored, nine home runs, and a triple.
Delawder batted .401 with 63 hits in 157 at-bats. He also added 14 doubles, a team-best five triples, and a homer.
Fitzwater recorded a 10-2 record with 71 strikeouts in 82.2 innings with a 4.35 ERA. His 10 wins and 14 games started tied the school single-season marks.
Renner posted a 9-3 mark with 60 strikeouts in 91 innings with a 3.56 ERA. His 14 games started and seven complete games tied the school single-season records.
Members of the first team will appear on the national ballot for the All-American Selection Committee in Montgomery, Alabama on Monday, May 26. The Player of the Year and Pitcher of the Year from the region are guaranteed a spot on one of the three All-American teams selected in Montgomery.
