PRINCETON, W.Va. -- Shepherd College shortstop Mike Spry (Kent County/Chestertown, MD) was recently named the 2003 West Virginia Conference Baseball Hitter and Player of the Year in voting conducted by league coaches. The Rams led the league with five first team selections. OutfielderJosh Delawder (Paw Paw (Potomac State)/Paw Paw, WV), designated hitterCharlie Drummond (Strasburg/Strasburg, VA), and pitchers J. R. Fitzwater (Hedgesville (Potomac State)/ Hedgesville, WV) and Brian Renner (Handley (Potomac State)/ Winchester, VA) were also named to the first team. Spry, Drummond, and Renner were repeat selections on the All-WVIAC first team.
Spry led the WVIAC with 13 home runs and 54 runs batted in. He also ranked among the conference leaders with a .447 batting average and 38 runs scored. Spry was a three-time WVIAC Player of the Week honoree for the Northern Division champion Rams.
Drummond batted .435 for the Rams with eight homers, 45 runs batted in, and 36 runs scored. He also added a team-best 16 doubles and a triple.
Delawder recorded a .396 batting average with 13 doubles. 22 runs batted in, and 33 runs scored. He also had a team-best five triples and was one of the team's top base-stealing threats with seven stolen bases in eight attempts.
Fitzwater led the Ram pitching staff with a 10-2 mark in 14 appearances this year. His 10 wins were also the most in the league. He also topped the team in strikeouts with 68 in 76 innings.
Renner recorded a 9-2 mark in 14 appearances this year. He had a team-best 2.76 ERA with 58 strikeouts in 88 innings.
