RAMS SWEEP SERIES FROM ALDERSON-BROADDUS

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Shepherd University pounded out 12 hits in a 4-1 win over Alderson-Broaddus in WVIAC baseball action at Fairfax Field on Saturday. The win moves Shepherd's winning streak to eight games.

Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when junior outfielder Joe Cook (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun County HS) led off with a walk and later scored a ground out by junior catcher David Toth (Lexington, KY/Lexington Christian Academy/Potomac State).

The Battlers tied the game at 1-1 on a solo homer by Ray Gill in the second.

Shepherd took the lead for good in the third when junior third baseman Nicky Brown (Hedgesville, WV/Hedgesville HS/ Potomac State) led off with a single and later scored on a single by freshman designated hitter Phillip Powell (Hagerstown, MD/South Hagerstown HS).

The Rams added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth. Freshman second baseman Josh Bowers (Williamsport, MD/Williamsport HS) doubled and later scored on a double off the bat of Joe Cook. Cook later scored on a ground out by freshman first baseman Dirk Webb (Hedgesville, WV/Hedgesville HS).

Nicky Brown led the Rams with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate. Cook, Webb, and Powell added two hits each.

Ray Gill led the Battlers with a 3-for-4 effort.

Junior pitcher Chris Anderson (Middletown, MD/ Middletown HS/Hagerstown CC) pitched a pair of hitless innings in relief and earned his first win as a Ram. Junior reliever Austin Bowie (Paeonian Springs, VA/Loudoun Valley HS) shut down the Battlers in the ninth and picked up his second save in as many days. Wes Callow took the loss for the Battlers.

Shepherd improves to 12-6 overall, 6-0 in WVIAC action, while Alderson-Broaddus falls to 1-23, 0-3. The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Slippery Rock for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
