PHILIPPI, WV -- Shepherd College swept Alderson-Broaddus in WVIAC baseball doubleheader action on Tuesday at Battler Stadium. The Rams rallied for a 6-5 win in nine innings in game one and added a 6-1 triumph in the nightcap.
Jake Ellifritz (Keyser (Potomac State/Coastal Carolina)/Keyser, WV) had four hits in game one, including an RBI-single to score Mike Spry (Kent County/Chestertown, MD) in the ninth inning to clinch the victory. Spry and Jason Rhea (Berkeley Springs (Pensacola JC)/Abingdon, VA) added three hits apiece, while Charlie Drummond (Strasburg/Strasburg, VA) and Jason Walck (Waynesboro/Waynesboro, PA) had two hits each.
Shepherd reliever Jimmy Jackson (Old Mill/Millersville, MD) picked up his fifth win of the year. Jackson entered the game in the fifth inning and pitched scoreless ball over the last five innings. He also recorded four strikeouts. Ram starter Jeff Gaskins (Loudoun Valley (Potomac State)/Lovettsville, VA) also had four strikeouts before being replaced by Monte Spurgeon (Hedgesville/Hedgesville, WV) in the fourth.
Brian Powell (Allegany (Allegany College)/Cumberland, MD) pitched a complete game three-hitter to lead the Rams in the nightcap. Powell fanned four and allowed only one unearned run.
Leading the Rams at the plate were Lucas Taylor (Keyser (Potomac State/Davis & Elkins)/Keyser, WV) (2-for-4, 2 doubles) and Rhea (a double and two RBI). Preston Miller (Turner Ashby/Harrisonburg, VA)added an RBI-double, while Powell helped his own cause with an RBI-single in the third to give the Rams the lead for good.
Shepherd improves to 26-7-1, 15-3 in WVIAC action, while Alderson-Broaddus falls to 15-19, 9-9. The Rams return home to host WVU-Tech on Saturday. Doubleheader action will begin at 1:00 p.m. at Fairfax Field.
